Description:
We are Chicago’s newest pediatric endocrinology fellowship program, started in the fall of 2014. We are a comprehensive three-year training program, fully accredited by the ACGME. The University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System is at the epicenter of many of the changes our healthcare system is undergoing, creating exciting and unique training opportunities. Our mission is to provide the knowledge, skills and attributes that will allow fellows to become excellent and competent pediatric endocrinologists.
RUSH University Children’s Hospital delivers comprehensive, high quality, innovative family-centered excellence in child health services while promoting the most impactful research and the highest innovation in education.
The first year of training focuses on mastering basic concepts in eliciting relevant clinical history, performing physical examinations, and developing management plans. The second and third years focuses on conducting clinical or basic science research, teaching residents and medical students, in addition to achieving further experience and confidence to practice independently. The program also aims to prepare fellows for board certification.
Prerequisite Training/Selection Criteria
Applicants for the endocrinology fellowship must have satisfactorily completed residency training in pediatric in an ACGME approved program. Applicants who have graduated from a foreign medical school must have a valid, unexpired ECFMG certificate to enter a program in Graduate Medical Education. *For interested foreign applicants, the only visa we accept is J-1 visa. Applicants are selected on the basis of commitment to advancing pediatric endocrinology, a history of demonstrated skill in interpersonal communication during residency, medical knowledge as reflected in residency evaluations and test scores, and prior history of scholarship and advocacy.

Pediatric Endocrinology Education Goals:
These relate to each rotation in Years 1-3:
- Demonstrate the appropriate history and physical examination skills for endocrine disorders, with particular emphasis on the examination of stature, thyroid, and pubertal stage.
- Know the pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and management of endocrine disease including, but not limited to, disorders of growth, puberty, pituitary, thyroid, pancreatic, gonadal and adrenal function.
- Understand and be able to easily access information relating to the pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, drug side effects and drug interactions of the medication which are prescribed for patients with various endocrine disorders.
- Weigh the risks and benefits of endocrine therapies.
- Demonstrate the ability to counsel and educate patients about their diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
- Develop the skills to coordinate care for patients with chronic illness and recognize the psychological effects of chronic illness.
- Recognize the value of support organization in patient’s education and utilize these resources when appropriate.
- Demonstrate the ability to consult with and educate other physicians and health care providers.
- Understand the costs of therapy and diagnostic testing and utilize medical resources in cost effective manner.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and appropriate use of billing codes.
- Conduct comprehensive literature searches and demonstrate ability to analyze medical and scientific literature
- Demonstrate personal and professional characteristics including compassion, caring, altruism, honesty, integrity, ethical behavior and professionalism.
- Understand the need for a lifelong pursuit of excellence, self-directed learning and continuing education
