Pediatric Chief Resident Job Description
The general Pediatrics residency program at the University of Kentucky is seeking an enthusiastic individual for the position of Pediatric Chief Resident for the academic year of 2026 to 2027. This position would start July 1, 2026.
Distribution of Effort
- Clinical service time: 30%
- Administrative time: 60%
- Professional development: 10%
The responsibilities and expectations of this position are outlined below.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Clinical responsibilities will include an annual coverage of 8 total service weeks, including four weeks of newborn nursery service and four weeks of hospital medicine service.
- A commitment of two days to our Twilight clinic per month (including one weekend day and one weekday), which will be covered by supplemental pay.
- There will be no consecutive clinical service assigned during the months of July, September, October, November, December, January, or June. Consecutive clinical service is defined as any clinical service during Monday through Friday that requires a provider to be present or on service more than two days consecutively. The provider may, however, be required to fill in for residents in case of scheduling errors or other extreme circumstances.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Coordination and maintenance of the resident master schedule, aligned with the ACGME and RC requirements for pediatric, internal medicine-pediatrics and triple board residents. This also includes coordinating the yearly schedule for off-service residents rotating on pediatric clinical rotations.
- Resident call and clinic schedule maintenance aligned with requirements for PICU, NICU, Hospital Medicine, Night Call/Shifts, Newborn Nursery call, General Pediatrics Clinic coverage, and holiday block coverage for pediatric, internal medicine-pediatric, and triple board residents as well as any off-service residents rotating on pediatric clinical rotations.
- Work closely with program coordinators to schedule and coordinate retreats, ITE exams, all teaching conferences, including Noon Conference and Morning Report, and other special events, such as graduation, awards day, etc.
- Working closely with program leadership and coordinators for the of planning and coordinating residency recruitment, including interviewing applicants.
- Working with the Program Director and Associate Program Directors and Pediatric Coordinators to plan and execute first year resident orientation.
- Working closely with program leadership to assist in day-to-day operations of the pediatric residency program including identifying and helping with the management of struggling learners, helping improve and evaluate both educational and clinical curriculum and participation in weekly residency leadership meetings.
Professional Development
- This will include adequate time to study for and take the American Board of Pediatrics General Certifying exam.
- Adequate time and support to attend the Chief Resident Conference, as well as APPD or other professional and national meetings.
- The program will also support other professional development opportunities identified by the chief resident.
