The Baylor College of Medicine Department (BCM) of Pediatrics in Houston, Texas is recruiting for a Pediatric Residency Program Director (PD).  The primary training site for the program is Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH).  This extraordinary leader will oversee the recruitment, training, and evaluation of all pediatric residents in the four core pediatric programs. In addition, together with the Associate Program Directors, the PD collaborates with the leadership of several other Departments or Divisions in leading recruitment, training, and evaluation of residents in three preliminary and two combined training programs.  The Pediatric Residency Program at BCM/TCH in Houston began in 1954.  With a wonderful history of dedicated educational leaders and champions the Pediatric Residency Program has continued to grow over these past 70 years to the current number of 196 residents.

The PD will assess and address the needs of individuals as well as the program as a whole to continuously improve and optimize performance.  Emphasis must be placed on fostering teamwork in order to maintain an optimal learning environment which includes 21 different Clinical Divisions within the Department of Pediatrics as well as other Departments (e.g., Surgery, Anesthesia, OB/GYN, etc.) and the numerous opportunities for interprofessional education that occurs at TCH.

The PD will be responsible for ensuring adherence to all relevant regulatory requirements, including those of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and American Board of Pediatrics (ABP).

The PD attends Divisional Chief/Vice Chair meetings, BCM Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) meetings, and the Annual Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD) meetings.  The PD is supported by 8 Associate Program Directors, five Chief Residents, four Program Coordinators and one Program Manager.  The new PD will have 80% protected time to perform this role with a maximum of 20% time for clinical duties.

Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O. degree with board certification in general pediatrics and/or a pediatric subspecialty.
  • Good standing within the applicants’ Department/Medical School.
  • A current or prior leadership role in the area of Graduate Medical Education (e.g., program director, associate program director or similar).
  • Demonstration of skills in managing an educational program, conflict resolution, oversight and management of others, curricular design, and timely and effective communication.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Track record of consistently meeting deadlines.

Other Desired Qualities:

  • Advanced training in medical education which could include course work, longitudinal or degree programs, or participating in specialized programming.
  • Experience in program management, curricular design, and implementation.
  • Sustained history of scholarship in applicants’ specialty.
  • History of scholarship around graduate medical education topics.
  • Computer and database experience (e.g., Excel, RedCap, etc.)
