The Department of Pediatrics at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) is seeking to hire a board certified or board eligible pediatric hematologist-oncologist to join the division of pediatric hematology oncology. The candidate will help build service lines that they have passion for. Those include neuro-oncology, survivorship, and hematology. Their hire will expand the faculty portfolio and support education of trainees in the pediatric hematology oncology fellowship program we started in July 2023.
The school of medicine at TTUHSC offers an academic environment with an opportunity for collaboration with a large variety of healthcare disciplines and the potential to collaborate with faculty at other schools through the robust interprofessional community. The pediatric department offers a multi-disciplinary team that augments the ability of the pediatric community to provide primary and subspecialty services that encompass most patient needs here in West Texas.
The pediatric hematology oncology division includes four physicians, four lab scientists and two advanced practice providers. We have five research associates and have access to additional resources through the clinical research institute. We operate at two collaborating academic hospitals. Those are Covenant Children’s Hospital and University Medical Center Children’s Hospital. Both offer inpatient and outpatient care to our patients, and each has its own, good standing, membership in the children’s oncology group (COG). Our environment is rich with educational opportunities with medical students, resident physicians, and hematology oncology fellows. Learners from other disciplines, including advanced practice providers and nurses, are offered the opportunity to work with professionals within their disciplines at our clinics.
Our lab houses the Childhood Cancer Repository for COG which is the central repository for cell lines and xenografts. It serves as the resource lab for defining telomere maintenance mechanisms for COG. It is a member of many national consortia and networks, including the South Plains Oncology Consortium (SPOC) and the New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy (NANT) consortium. It is supported by multimillion dollar grants from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), and Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
Our service area extends across West Texas and Eastern New Mexico with a service population exceeding one million people. We strive to provide the highest standard of medical care and research to our patients. We diagnose an average of 55 new pediatric oncology patients annually. We offer a limited number of early phase clinical trials but plan to expand that option in the upcoming years. Our patients receive local treatment for most of their diseases, but we collaborate with regional centers on very complex surgeries, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and proton beam radiation therapy.
The candidate will be encouraged and supported to expand the service line of their choice. They will also be expected to contribute to teaching medical students, pediatric residents, and hematology oncology fellows.
