Children’s Mercy Kansas City is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for our Academic General Pediatrics Fellowship Program with training to begin July 2024. This three (3) year program, accredited by the Academic Pediatric Association, is designed to provide advanced education to highly qualified physicians with a passion for medical education, research, leadership, child advocacy, and clinical care of pediatric patients. The training experience will increase the breadth and depth of participants understanding of pediatric research and academic medicine.

The mission of the fellowship training program is to train pediatric clinicians to enter careers in academic medicine as medical educators, independent researchers, and advocates focused on issues affecting underserved communities and populations.

Core Curriculum and Program Expectations
Core curriculum and program expectations include the following:
- Engage in scholarly activities that can build skills in research methodology and techniques, systematic literature review, primary research project, grant and manuscript writing (60-80% protected time).
- Work at Children’s Mercy Broadway outpatient clinics including primary care, teen, and specialty clinics as well as the clinical practice co-located within a Head Start program, Operation Breakthrough (20-40% clinical time).
- Supervise and teach medical students and pediatric residents.
- Complete either a master’s degree or certificate in health professions education.
- Attend fellowship trainees’ Common Core and Grant Writing curriculum offered through the Office of Graduate Medical Education.
- Participate in the specific educational seminars that will complement trainees learning needs including curriculum development and evaluation, journal club, research-in-progress, scientific presentations, and physician wellness.
- Engage in educational collaborations with fellowship trainees within and outside of Children’s Mercy Kansas City.
- Receive mentorship from faculty in the Division of General Academic Pediatrics.
- Option to complete an international, medical education elective·
- Participate in an optional fourth year of fellowship training in clinical pharmacology.
One (1) fellowship position is available at Children’s Mercy Kansas City that provides trainees with a competitive compensation and benefits package including, but not limited to: educational stipend to use toward books, travel and other educational materials; professional development stipend to present scholarly activity; health and dental insurance for trainee and dependents with no premiums; hospital-issued iPad or laptop; moving allowance; 20 days of vacation; paid sick time; paid board exam; access to clinical and research librarians, statisticians, scientific writers, learning specialists and wellness professionals; and tuition assistance for certifications or master’s degrees in a variety of related areas.

Children’s Mercy Kansas City, the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKC), and Kansas University Medical Center (KUMC) created an integrated Division of General Academic Pediatrics, focused on aligning clinical services, educational opportunities, quality improvement and research programs, and advocacy efforts across the Kansas City metro region. Our combined faculty of more than 70 pediatricians, along with over 20 mid-level providers, serves over 130,000 outpatient visits each year, with a unique combination of clinical settings including urban, suburban, and co-located in childcare facilities. All of our primary care clinics have achieved NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home certification. The Division staffs inpatient teams and newborn nurseries at Children’s Mercy Adele Hall Campus, Truman Medical Center, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, and KUMC. The Division is also the clinical home for specialized programs including the Weight Management Program (in conjunction with the Center for Children’s Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition), the Beacon Program (for children with medical complexity), ADHD Clinic, and Down Syndrome Clinic. These programs provide additional opportunities for novel research and quality improvement projects.
Applicants with intermediate or better Spanish proficiency and/or an interest in Latinx health, have the opportunity for a unique training experience in the Clínica Hispana de Ciudados de Salud (CHiCoS). Located at Children’s Mercy Broadway, fellows would work in a Spanish-speaking clinic alongside Spanish proficient general academic pediatricians, culture and language coaches, and support staff to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate medical care to patients and families. Fellows would be able to develop and evaluate curriculum and programs for patients and residents, as well as conduct research on innovative education and care models related to immigrant and limited English proficient families and communities. Spanish-speaking fellows completing clinical work in CHiCoS would have the opportunity to graduate from the fellowship program with certification as a qualified bilingual pediatrician.
