Minutes of the APPD
Western Region Meeting
Renaissance Hotel, Washington, DC
May 13, 2005
- We began the meeting with self introductions
of people attending the breakfast meeting.
- Programs included initially in another
Region that selected the Western Region instead:
- Phoenix Children's Hospital/Maricopa
Medical Center
- University of New Mexico, New Mexico
- University of Colorado, Colorado
- Suggested "needs" for the Region
- Updated email listserv: There were
many instances where a communication mishap or delay occurred
because the information needed to go through the APPD central
office before distribution. There should be a person in the Region
responsible for the listserv, but keeping email addresses current
should be the responsibility of the central office (because these
are usually updated when dues are collected). The listserv should
include chief residents as well.
- Regional identification: It was suggested
that there be a "box" on the annual dues form which allows each
program to identify the Region they wish to be a member of.
- Regional dues: For many programs,
it would be easier to get money for regional activities if they
were collected as part of the APPD dues, rather than try to ask
for money on an individual basis. Each Region could determine
the amount of dues they wish to collect specifically for Regional
activities.
- Telephone communication support:
Organization for holding regional phone conference calls would
be helpful from the central office.
- Technologic support: The Region would
like to have a web page to keep information (such as information
regarding the Regional meeting) and support for uploading and
upkeep would be helpful.
- Conference support: For the Regional
meetings, financial support for the cost of meeting space would
be necessary/helpful.
- Regional recognition: It was felt
that the APPD should find a way to recognize and give "credit" for
work done as a Region, including the person who organizes the
regional meeting. Without that recognition (such as certificate,
luncheon/dinner with the Board, letter to chair, invitation to
the Fall meeting, acknowledged position for their CV, etc) it
would be harder to sustain efforts directed for the Region. In
addition, it should provide an opportunity for newer members
of the APPD to express interest/ be groomed for leadership positions
in the central organization.
- Suggested "activities" for the Region
- The breakfast associated with the
annual meeting was an important time to get together in a smaller
more intimate group. It also allowed time for planning regional
activities such as our regional meeting.
- We discussed our previous efforts
to have a Regional meeting in the Western Region. For many years,
the Southern California Residency programs met together as a
group. There was a similar effort with the Northern California
programs. Last year there was a Regional Meeting hosted by Loma
Linda University, (organized by Sharon Riesen, MD). Approximately
30 people attended including Program Directors, Program Coordinators,
and Chief Residents. The program was held on a Friday, and the
morning session reviewed the proposed RRC changes. The afternoon
session consisted of several presentations by participants regarding
new educational innovations developed by their residency program.
Feedback on the meeting was very positive and it was suggested
that this activity be continued.
- The date of the next meeting will
be September 16th and will be hosted by UC San Diego (Michael
Gottschalk). The exact format of the meeting has not been determined
yet, but Mike tentatively envisions meeting as a entire group
for a review of 4-5 programs. Then the meeting will split up
into three groups; directors, coordinators and chief residents.
We'll all come back together for lunch and then a tour the facilities.
Mike is working on generating a listserve for the region which
will have four options; entire group; directors only, coordinators
only and chief residents only. Through the listserve, Mike will
request topics for discussion for the meeting. Medical student
advisors for pediatric applicants (which may or may not be a
program director) will be specifically invited to attend the
conference as well.
- University of Washington volunteered
to serve as host for the following year Regional meeting.
- It was suggested that the APPD Consultation
Program could be coordinated with the Regional meeting and the
consultant could serve as the Keynote speaker of the meeting.
- There was a discussion that our Region
might consider developing a Chief Resident program in the future
that could be used in addition to or instead of the national
chief resident "camps" offered by various groups.
- It was discussed that many (but not
all) of the subspecialty fellowship directors do not have a "home" and
the Region/Regional meeting might serve as a place for these
directors to get information regarding RRC requirements and share
in residency knowledge/developments (such as in evaluations of
residents).
- Regional Organization
- The Program Coordinators met separately
for part of the Regional Breakfast and elected Tracie Barnett
and Drake Kendermore (University of Washington) as Regional Coordinator.
- The Program Directors also met and
decided the best format for our region would be a 2 year position,
with someone elected each year as a Regional Chair Elect. Bob
Kamei will serve in the first one year term of office as Regional
Chair and Roni Vasan was elected to serve as Regional Chair elect.
