Section Chief of General Pediatrics, Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics, Kansas City

The Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine are recruiting a Section Chief of General Pediatrics. The section has a four-fold mission: clinical care, teaching, research and advocacy.

Our 37 physicians and 12 nurse practitioners provide clinical care through multiple diverse primary care sites and specialized outpatient clinics (e.g. the nationally recognized Phit Kids Obesity Clinic, ADHD, Down Syndrome, failure to thrive, a special clinic for residents who want to work with Spanish-speaking families, and others). Section members staff the newborn nursery at Truman Medical Center and attend on the inpatient wards at Children's Mercy Hospitals. Last year, the Section's clinicians provided over 100,000 patient visits. Many of our patients are poor, uninsured, and underserved.

We perform a major role in education: directing the medical school's pediatrics clerkship, supervising over 100 pediatrics and medicine-pediatrics residents' continuity clinics, and giving dozens of core curriculum lectures. Our research focuses on innovations in education, quality improvement programs throughout the hospital, and health disparities with the challenges of providing care to an increasingly diverse population.

Candidates for Section Chief must have a record of successful health care leadership and academic accomplishment, superb interpersonal skills, a vision for the future of primary pediatric care in an academic medical center, and the strategic planning skills to implement that vision. He or she will provide mentorship in research, education, advocacy, and leadership. Unique research opportunities exist to collaborate with NIH-funded programs in personalized medicine, pharmacogenomics, clinical pharmacology, and educational research. Candidates must be board certified in pediatrics. Salary and benefits are competitive.

The Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics is a 317-bed pediatric health care system that includes two hospitals and two freestanding clinics at locations on both sides of the Missouri-Kansas border. As the only free-standing pediatric hospital between Denver and St. Louis, we serve 150 counties in Missouri and Kansas and have over 14,000 inpatient admissions and 300,000 outpatient visits each year. We are a dedicated teaching hospital, with residency programs in pediatrics, medicine-pediatrics and pediatric neurology and fellowship training programs in 24 subspecialties. We are affiliated with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, an innovative 6 year program leading to a combined BA-MD degree.
