Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Opening

The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Department of Pediatrics has an opening for a fellow starting July 2010. The fellowship is an accredited new Pediatric Rheumatology fellowship program. The program director Murray Passo, MD has experience as a Pediatric Rheumatology fellowship program director for nineteen years. The program will include a comprehensive clinical experience for one year integrated with two years of research and a longitudinal continuity clinic. The program has a strong affiliation with the Medicine Rheumatology fellowship program. The Pediatric Rheumatology program has a strong clinical base as we serve most of the patients of South Carolina in conjunction with University of South Carolina in Columbia. First or Second Year Fellows

The Department of Pediatrics at The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and the Pennsylvania State Hershey Children's Hospital is currently accepting applications for a first or second year fellows to start in July 2010. The PICU is a 12 bed high acuity multidisciplinary pediatric intensive care unit with a contiguous 14 bed intermediate unit for less acute cases. The PICU has active programs in all aspects of pediatric medicine and surgery including cardiothoracic surgery and trauma. Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital is a level one pediatric trauma center. The Pediatric Critical Care Service is the primary service for and manages all medical admissions to the PICU. A unique collaborative relationship with our surgical colleagues enables our team to be integrally involved in every aspect of the hour to hour management of all trauma and surgical patients in the PICU. Thus, the critical care fellows will actively participate in the multidisciplinary care of all patients admitted to the PICU. Six full-time board certified critical care attendings staff the intensive care unit at all times. Most recent outcomes evaluation through PICUEs Prism III PICU Evaluations encompassing over 1700 consecutive admissions demonstrated The Penn State Children's Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit's severity of illness adjusted mortality to be greater than 4 standard deviations superior to the mean.

The fellowship program is ACGME accredited with ample opportunity for clinical and basic science research. Our division has two positions for 1st year Pediatric Rheumatology Fellows open for the coming academic year 2010/2011. We enjoy our new State- of the Art Children's Hospital into which we moved in the spring of 2009.

Our three-year ACGME accredited fellowship offers fellows comprehensive training in both, the clinical and research aspects of rheumatology. Fellows will find a stimulating working environment in one of the largest and most active pediatric rheumatology programs in the United States. Our division provides care for a broad patient population whose conditions cover the full spectrum of rheumatologic diseases and musculoskeletal pain syndromes.

The first year of training is fully devoted to clinical training with full immersion into the outpatient clinic and inpatient consultation service. A rich curriculum of didactic seminars carries through the entire training. Our division benefits from close collaboration with the training program in the division of Adult Rheumatology with internationally recognized specialists in the field.

The focus turns to research during the second and third years of the fellowship. Fellows receive guidance and support through their mentor along the clinical or basic research pathway they have chosen. Our fellows benefit from an emphasis on research training that takes full advantage of the division's NIH supported research program devoted to exploring critical autoimmunity issues and clinical research program that is active in the study of new therapies for rheumatic diseases. Phoenix Children's Hospital is seeking a second BE/BC Developmental-Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician to join the Children's Neuroscience Institute. The CNI is composed of the divisions of Neurology/Developmental Pediatrics, Psychiatry-Psychology, Neurosurgery and Rehabilitation, collaborating in an effort to provide optimal, efficient disease specific care. Responsibilities of this position include participation in the Neuro Developmental Evaluation Program (evaluation and monitoring of young children at risk for developmental disabilities, especially following injuries in the neonatal period), Autism Program, and ADHD clinics. We have an unexpected vacancy in our pediatric nephrology fellowship program for July 1st, 2010 start date. Our matched fellow has had to withdraw from the match commitment due to family medical issues.

Description: The goal of our nephrology fellowship program is to develop academic pediatric nephrologists who are committed to the clinical care of children with all types of renal disease and with necessary educational and research skills. We foster an environment for acquisition of the clinical and basic research skills.

There is a large patient population available to nephrology fellows for patient care, teaching and research. Each year, we average approximately 250 admissions, 150 consultations (average length of stay 5.2 days), 15-20 renal transplants, 86 kidney biopsies, 3000 outpatient visits, 8 patients on chronic hemodialysis, an additional 2/week being acutely dialyzed and an average of six patients on outpatient peritoneal dialysis. We have a designated fellows' continuity clinic.

The pediatric nephrology division has two didactic seminars/journal club meetings weekly, a weekly patient care conference, a pathology conference twice each month a radiology conference and an educational conference with adult nephrology quarterly. At least 15 months of the pediatric nephrology fellow's training will be dedicated to clinical and/or basic research.

Candidate requirements: Must be eligible for American Board of Pediatrics certifying exam.

Due to unexpected circumstances, a position has become available in Pediatric Pulmonary starting in July 2010 at The University of Chicago-Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL The Pediatric Pulmonology fellowship training focuses on clinical care, scholarly activity, and teaching as an advanced, three-year, subspecialty program beyond general pediatric or medicine-pediatric residency training. Candidates are eligible for the Pediatric Pulmonology Subboard Examination of the American Board of Pediatrics following successful completion of the program. Clinical care is provided for children with remarkable variety of lung diseases and breathing disorders, such as asthma, sleep-disordered breathing, apnea, central hypoventilation, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung diseases, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, chronic respiratory insufficiency, and congenital lung anomalies. Fellows have the opportunity to learn and perform bronchoscopic techniques, including bronchoalveolar lavage and biopsies, and gain understanding of pulmonary function studies, blood gas measurements, and overnight polysomnography. Primary Care Fellowship in Academic General Pediatrics

We are currently accepting applications for the Primary Care Fellowship in Academic General Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota.

The overall purpose of this fellowship is to improve the status of children and adolescents in the United States by training a cadre of pediatric clinician researchers who will assume positions of leadership in Academic General Pediatrics within academic institutions, conduct the next generation of primary care research, and train a new generation of pediatricians who will be committed to serving children in low-income, high-need areas of the United States.

The fellowship is two to three years and includes an integrated set of coursework leading to a Masters in Public Health, two half-days per week in clinics serving historically underserved populations of children, and mentored research experiences.

The fellowship curriculum is constructed along a three dimensional model consisting of:

  • General pediatrics knowledge areas,
  • Research and academic leadership skills, and
  • A focal area of expertise.

The fellowship will provide trainees the knowledge and skill base to address the current and emerging health issues of children, youth, and their families.

The Primary Care Fellowship in Academic General Pediatrics is grounded in Divisions with an extensive research and publication record as well as 30 years of experience in post-graduate fellowship training.

The fellowship is open to physicians who have completed an accredited Pediatrics residency program by the start of the program and are Board certified or Board eligible as defined by the American Board of Pediatrics. The Division of General Pediatrics in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics is accepting applications for positions in our Academic General Pediatrics fellowship to begin July 2010. The Academic General Pediatrics fellowship at Vanderbilt is designed to prepare talented pediatrics-trained physicians for research careers in academic settings. Subspecialty Clinical and Research Fellowship in Obesity Medicine and Nutrition at Massachusetts General Hospital

The MGH Weight Center at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School invites applications for our subspecialty clinical and research fellowship in Obesity Medicine and Nutrition. This subspecialty fellowship - the first of its kind - is designed for current residents or recent graduates of specialty training programs in internal medicine or pediatrics who wish to obtain subspecialty training focused in the area of Obesity Medicine. We are currently recruiting fellows seeking to begin the fellowship program in either July 2010 or July 2011.

This fellowship has been designed to provide trainees with expertise, clinical experience and research training in the emerging field of Obesity Medicine, with a primary focus on the evaluation and management of patients with obesity and related metabolic disorders. Fellows will learn how to treat obesity by nutritional, behavioral, pharmacological and surgical means, as well as how to address the comorbidities of this disorder most effectively. Fellowship training in Obesity Medicine and Nutrition will occur over two or three years, depending on the experience and interest of each trainee. During the first year, trainees will spend the majority of time in the clinical environment learning about obesity and its comorbidities and clinical nutrition. By the end of the first year, fellows will have a good understanding of the physiology of body weight regulation and the research being conducted to advance knowledge in this field. They will be able to assess a patient with obesity or other nutritional disorders and to determine an appropriate treatment plan. Trainees will understand and utilize standard and innovative approaches to the treatment of obesity, including novel combination therapies, and they will participate in clinical trials of new emerging therapies. They will be able to complete a full pre-operative evaluation for patients with indications for weight loss surgery and provide comprehensive post-operative medical and nutritional care for these patients. Fellows will also develop the skills to be competent teachers of Obesity Medicine and Nutrition to medical students and residents in internal medicine, pediatrics and surgery. Beginning in the second fellowship year, trainees will pursue an intensive program of relevant clinical or basic science research that will be completed under the guidance of a member of the Obesity Medicine and Nutrition Program faculty.

Crozer-Keystone Health System is seeking a Chairman of Pediatric Medicine. The Chair of Pediatrics will sit at Crozer-Chester Medical Center (Crozer), a 371-bed not-for-profit tertiary-care teaching hospital located on a beautiful 68-acre campus. The medical center admits more than 22,000 patients, treats approximately 53,000 Emergency Department patients, and delivers about 2,000 babies a year. In 2006, Crozer opened the doors to a new 40,000 square-foot Emergency Department, which more than doubled the space devoted to emergency medicine and includes dedicated pediatric suites. Pediatric Services include a 23-bed Inpatient Unit, Delaware County's only Level IIIa Intensive Care Nursery, and the only Level III Emergency Department and Trauma Center in Delaware County.

The Chair of Pediatrics is responsible for the clinical, educational, research, administrative and fiscal operations of the department, including allocation of resources and the development and management of clinical programs. In addition the chair will provide strong leadership, expanding the department's clinical and residency programs and promoting quality of care. The chair will develop and oversee all strategic and operational aspects of the department and reviewing and approving departmental operating budgets.

An ideal candidate will have an M.D. degree with board certification in Pediatrics and an unrestricted state medical license. Strong leadership and team building skills with the capability to advance and develop a superior clinical service is a must. The ability to build solid collaborative relationships, both internally and externally and communicate effectively to a wide range of audiences is very important. Pediatric Hospitalist Position in Anchorage, Alaska at the Alaska Native Medical Center

Our Pediatric Hospitalist department of eight is seeking a board eligible/certified pediatrician to join their group at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. ANMC is the only tertiary care facility in the State of Alaska that solely serves the Alaska Native/Native American population. The pediatric hospitalists staff a nineteen bed pediatric unit which includes a four bed PICU. The PICU is staffed by three pediatric intensivists. In addition, the hospitalists staff both a twelve bed level 2 neonatal intensive care unit, and attend high risk deliveries of infants 32 weeks gestational age and above. The pediatric hospitalists provide consultation to other services on campus (e.g. surgery) and the emergency department, as well as telephone consultation for primary care providers across the state. Finally, the pediatric hospitalists staff a busy pediatric sedation service for patients who require radiologic or minor surgical procedures.

The Alaska Native Medical Center is located in Anchorage, Alaska, a city of over 270,000 people with excellent public schools, fine dining, theater, and live music. Anchorage boasts hundreds of miles of groomed, interconnected cross-country ski and bike trails in town and as well as world class alpine skiing at the Alyeska Resort only forty minutes south of Anchorage.   • 3 year accredited program at the Center for Children with Special Needs (CCSN) located at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. We are located in the theater district, near the Boston Common and Chinatown. We have collaborative relationships with other academic centers in Boston that expands the opportunities for fellows.
  • The CCSN is a multidisciplinary center has 7 DB pediatricians and includes neuropsychology, speech language pathology, social work and the fellow will also interact frequently with occupational and physical therapy, physiatry (physical medicine), genetics, psychiatry and neurology. Fellowship in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics - University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics

Description:

  • A comprehensive, three-year, ACGME (Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education) accredited pediatric fellowship program that offers exceptional training opportunities in clinical care, research, and education.
  • Fellows will work primarily in the Center for Disabilities and Development, a free-standing, three story facility devoted exclusively to services for individuals with disabilities or other chronic health problems and their families.
  • The outpatient clinic of the Center for Disabilities and Development provides diagnostic and therapeutic interventions annually to more than 4000 infants, children and young adults with a wide range of developmental and behavioral problems. Specialty clinics provide services to children with autistic spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, encopresis, and aggressive behaviors. The scheduling staff coordinates follow-up visits so that developmental-behavioral fellows gain longitudinal experience during their three-year fellowship caring for patients of specific interest to each fellow.

We seek a mid-career or senior physician to lead our Department's efforts to develop innovative educational programs at all levels of pediatric medical education. New York Presbyterian Hospital- Weill Cornell Center

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital- Weill Cornell Center is currently accepting applications for a first year fellow to start in either August or September of 2009 due to an unanticipated vacancy. The PICU is a 20 bed multidisciplinary unit with approximately 1200 admissions per year, serving infants and children with critical medical and surgical illness. The unit functions as the post-operative recovery area for all cardiovascular, neurosurgical and selected general surgical procedures performed on pediatric patients. General and critical care of all patients, including surgical patients, is provided by our critical care fellows under the supervision of seven full-time pediatric critical care attending physicians. A comprehensive program of pediatric critical care training is delivered in a scholarly environment over three years and encompasses 12-14 months of clinical service, a didactic educational curriculum and training and experience in clinical and/or basic science research. Clinical activities outside of the PICU include providing consultative services in a combined pediatric-adult burn ICU, two months on the anesthesiology service, one month at the New York Poison Control Center and participation in inter-hospital transport of approximately 150-200 critically ill patients during the period of training.

The fellowship program is ACGME accredited with ample opportunity for clinical and basic science research. Pediatric Scientist Development Program (PSDP)

This program is designed to provide research training and career development support relevant to specialty areas of pediatrics and to prepare entry-level faculty for research careers in academic pediatrics. Physicians who wish to train in basic, translational, or clinical research with an established investigator / research mentor are encouraged to apply, as are candidates who seek training in epidemiology/statistics, informatics, health services, or health policy. This Program provides a training environment in which talented pediatricians address central problems in child health with the most current scientific tools. Ultimately, these pediatric scientists, dedicated to continuing basic, translational, and clinical research, will translate research advances to improvements in clinical care for children.

The Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs, Inc. (AMSPDC) acts as the sponsoring organization for the PSDP. In a unique collaborative arrangement, funding is derived from grants from the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development and numerous private agencies and foundations, including the American Pediatric Society, American Academy of Pediatrics, Sick Kids Foundation, Paediatric Chairs of Canada, March of Dimes, and St. Jude Children's Research Foundation.

Two to three years of research training are funded by the Program after the completion of the clinical fellowship year(s). A sponsoring pediatric department assumes responsibility for support of clinical portion of the fellowship. Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center/ Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital in Hershey


The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center/ Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital in Hershey, PA is seeking candidates to fill one of the two Chief Resident positions for the academic year of July 2010 - June 2011. This is an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of a pediatric training program in a university-based Children's Hospital. As the referring children's hospital for the entire central Pennsylvania area, the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital serves a patient population of diverse ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds. Inpatient pediatric services include a general pediatric ward, a Level IV NICU, a Level I PICU, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and a busy newborn nursery. There are 42 categorical pediatric residents, 16 medicine/pediatric residents and pediatric fellowships in Hematology/Oncology, Neonatology and Pediatric Critical Care. In addition, Penn State Hershey is home to the Penn State College of Medicine. We seek candidates with a strong academic record, exceptional interpersonal skills and a sincere desire to work with and for children. The responsibilities of the position include both clinical and administrative duties. All candidates must have completed a three year residency in Pediatrics and have a strong commitment for teaching, as well as excellent leadership qualities. Post Pediatric Portal Project

The Post Pediatric Portal Project is a new and innovative 3 year pilot program approved by the Residency Review Committee of the ACGME. It provides training in general and child/adolescent psychiatry for Board Eligible and Board Certified pediatricians who decide to retrain in psychiatry. The Portal Project provides a 36 month training experience that meets requirements for Board Certification in both general and child/adolescent psychiatry. The sponsoring institution, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, is the primary affiliate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio. This Portal Project training site is the first of three approved sites to begin training pediatricians. At this time there are 4 Portal residents, 2 per training year.
