Spring
Meeting, San Francisco, CA
April 27, 2006
Minutes
Present: John Co, Jerry Rushton, Linda Waggoner-Fountain, Heather
McPhillips, George Johnson, Emmett Schmidt, Linda Tewksbury, Hilary
Haftel, Robert McGregor, Lynn Gardner
- Collaboration
with COMSEP: Linda Tewksbury, MD, Co-director of the pediatric
clerkship at
NYU and member of COMSEP, attended our
task force meeting. We discussed potential areas for collaboration.
One area that intrigued many was devising a better system of “sign
out” between medical schools and residency programs regarding
new interns. Specifically, many felt this many help with identifying
areas of strength and for improvement, perhaps for starting
an individualized learning plan. We agreed to continue to develop
this idea after the
spring meeting.
- Survey
Policy Update and Feedback: John Co summarized the surveys
that have gone through the survey process thus far. The first
survey on procedural training had a high response rate
(70
to 80%), the
results of which were presented at a platform presentation
at PAS. The second survey on the APA Education Guidelines had
a response
rate of 60 to 70%. The third survey, on international experiences
and education in pediatric residency training, was set to
be
distributed after the meeting. There was a healthy discussion
on the survey approval
process. Most agreed that the policy should encourage surveys
rather than be exclusionary.
- APPD
Website and Review of Projects/Abstracts for Posting: The APPD
Board has discussed the idea of having a section of
the revised
APPD website devoted to posting of abstracts and papers
related to pediatric residency education. Board members have
discussed
whether
these postings need to go through a formal approval process,
and whether the Research Task Force should play a role.
Many task force
members debated on whether the submissions for posting
would represent a biased sample, perhaps lower quality work
that
was not accepted
for publication elsewhere. All agreed that abstracts of
funded Special Projects Grants should be posted.
- Representative
needed for Research Advisory Board for Bright Futures oral
health promotion project: This project was presented
by Dr.
Co.
- Annual/Biennial
survey of status of Pediatric Resident Training: Many task
force members believed that established a regular
pre-meeting survey may be an effective method of surveying
membership on
hot-button issues. This will be suggested to the APPD
Board.
- Workshops
for next year: Dr. Co distributed copies of a workshop he has
helped lead at the PAS meetings regarding
publishing
educational
research. Many in the group felt this would be useful
to hear at APPD as well.
