Curriculum Task Force

APPD Curriculum Task Force
Spring Meeting 2005
Washington, D.C.
Minutes

1. There were 34 people in attendance, including the two special guests. 12 were new to the Task Force. Brief introductions and a history of task force activities and focus since inception in 2002.

2. Lisa Leggio, M.D. (from Medical College of Georgia) and Mary Carol Badat (from the AAP) kindly presented the concepts and functioning of Pedialink Residents’ Corner and the capabilities of the Individualized Learning Plans (ILP). There was much discussion about the specifics of the ILP. Some suggestions were made:

  • Make the Long term Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Pedialink site more like the resident ILP. Also, the idea of allowing senior residents fill out a CPD/ILP on pedialink during their last three months as residents. This would afford them the ability to get used to the “adult” ILP.
  • With the new Fellowship recommendations for a uniform time at the beginning of third year, under the list of “career plans” make “other” first. To point emphasize to residents that not predetermining a fellowship pathway is okay.
  • Put the Mock-ups on the Curriculum Task Force Toolshed, for PDs to become familiar with. Also have a downloadable introduction to “ILPs” available on the PD portal page.
  • The group was asked to think about modules on the PD portal page are needed or just good links.

The group was also asked about payment for the program. It would be free the first year, afterwards the task force members essentially unanimously showed support for the AAP simply raising the resident memberships fees and have all the residents automatically enrolled. We also discussed new Draft Guidelines about ILPs and that this program would certainly cost a lot less than having someone in the office do this work.

Dr. Leggio was very gracious and thanked everyone for their input.

3. The Task Force Toolshed was discussed. The hope from Dr. Burke is that this concept could be expanded. It will hopefully become more comprehensive. We are off to a good start. The workshop that is going on at this meeting from the Curriculum TF will be posted on the toolshed web site. The links need regularly checked up on. In the future, possibly the Board could approve some funds for maintenance of the site. The idea of testing/critiquing modules from various programs was discussed as well.

4. Needs Assessment: An announcement will go out when there is another periodic survey of the APPD membership. Hopefully this group will provide input for the Curricular aspects.

5. The APA Guidelines update was given by Franklin Trimm (thank you Franklin!). Members were thanked for all of the reviewing they have done. The evaluation of resident section of the project was “gutted”. Discussion centered on possibly having a module on the toolshed website called Program Planning.

6. The Curriculum task force workshop this year will feature 6 presentations in a sort of “platform session” model. Dr. Englander and Dr. Burke will be the moderators. Dr. Burke expressed the desire to continue this each year, using this format.

7. Updates:

  • Susan Bostwick is the representative on the Breastfeeding subcommittee of Resident Education Committee at the AAP. She has attended a meeting and gave the program directors view of the curriculum and how it may fit into a program. There will be more to follow.
  • Roni Vasan is working with a multi-disciplinary group on creating a curriculum aimed at genetics in Primary Care. Roni has graciously volunteered to represent our Task Force on this project.
  • Thanks to all who reviewed and commented on the AAP Continuous Professional Development document
  • Look for another e-mail asking for two references about curriculum for the toolshed.

Thanks to all who participated! It was an enthusiastic crowd with lots of good ideas
